Where do helicopters fly from near Mussoorie?
The yatra flights do not leave from Mussoorie itself. They leave from Dehradun, about 35 km below the town by road:
- Sahastradhara Helipad, on the north-eastern edge of Dehradun, is the main base for the yatra: the Chardham circuit, the Do Dham packages and the Kedarnath and Badrinath day trips.
- Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun's airport south-east of the city, is used by some departures, including the same-day Do Dham.
- The George Everest helipad, on the Park Estate ridge west of Mussoorie, is used for some joy rides and air safaris, depending on the operator flying that season.
Your booking confirmation names the departure point and the reporting time. The drive down the hill takes time, especially in the morning, so for an early yatra flight it is often easier to spend the night before in Dehradun. See helicopter service in Dehradun for both bases.
Helicopter yatra for travellers staying in Mussoorie
- Chardham Yatra by Helicopter: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in five nights and six days from Dehradun. One of its hotel options is a stay at the Taj Foothills Mussoorie.
- Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter: Kedarnath and Badrinath in three nights and four days.
- Kedarnath same-day helicopter yatra from Dehradun via Phata. The Kedarnath shuttle tickets themselves are booked on IRCTC.
- Badrinath yatra by helicopter: a seat on a fixed departure or a private charter for up to six.
- Hemkund Sahib yatra by helicopter packages, in season.
The Chardham and Do Dham packages can add a Haridwar, Rishikesh or Mussoorie day trip on your arrival or departure day. Package prices are on request: you get a written quote for your date and group size, inclusive of taxes and the State Government royalty, before anything is paid.
Private helicopter charters in Mussoorie
A charter puts a helicopter at your group's disposal for a route and date of your choosing. Common requests from Mussoorie are:
- Private helicopter charter for business, VIP and point-to-point travel.
- Helicopter on rent: hire a helicopter by the trip for travel, events, survey or yatra.
- Helicopter for weddings: a grand entry or getaway transfer for the couple, for destination weddings in the hills.
- Flower showering by helicopter for weddings, anniversaries and temple events.
- Air ambulance: helicopter and medical air transfers from the hills to hospitals.
- Helicopter for film shooting and aerial cinematography, with camera-mount support.
- Aerial laser survey and other survey flying.
Where the helicopter can land depends on the site and the permissions for that flight, so every charter is checked and quoted in writing by the operator cleared for it.
Joy rides and air safari
Mussoorie sits on a ridge at about 2,000 m, and a short scenic flight here shows the Doon valley to the south and, on a clear day, the snow peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya to the north. Rides fly from the George Everest helipad or from a Dehradun helipad below the town. Routes, the best season and what decides the price are on the Mussoorie air safari and joy ride page.
How booking works
- Send the route or service, your date and the number of passengers.
- We check with the operator cleared for that flight and send you a written quote with what is included.
- You pay only after you accept the quote, and the confirmation names the departure point and reporting time.
Prices for packages and charters are on request, because they depend on the route, the flying time, the seats filled and the date.
When do the flights run?
The yatra flights follow the temple season, from late April or May to October or November, with the clearest flying in May and June and in September and October. Mountain flights stop for cloud and rain, so a spare day in the plan helps. Joy rides and charters run in daylight and fair weather, through more of the year.
