Chardham, Badrinath Dham

About Badrinath Dham

Badrinath Yatra is counted among the most important religious tours for those following Hinduism, and thousands of pilgrims undertake it every year. By road it is a long mountain journey from Dehradun, often two days each way. By helicopter it becomes a same-day darshan: about an hour in the air each way, with around four hours at Badrinath.

Flying spares older pilgrims and families the long road, though Badrinath is still at about 3,300 metres and the weather there changes quickly; pilgrims with heart or breathing conditions should ask their doctor about the altitude before booking. Share your dates and group size and we will help you plan the itinerary.

Badrinath yatra by helicopter: your options

Badrinath is flown to directly from Dehradun, with a car from the helipad to the temple, so there is no trek. There are five ways to do it by helicopter; the first two are the same day at the shrine, bought in different ways.

  • A place on the fixed departure. The Badrinath fixed departure by helicopter is a same-day group package, price on request, with the flight shared with other pilgrims. The dates are the operator's, and the flight needs six passengers to run.
  • A private charter. The private Badrinath helicopter charter is a Bell 407 or AS 350 B3 that flies only your group of up to six, priced for the whole helicopter, on a date you choose.
  • Badrinath with Kedarnath. The Kedarnath Badrinath Do Dham packages pair the two shrines, in a single flying day or with nights on the way. The Kedarnath leg uses the IRCTC helicopter service, booked separately in each pilgrim's name.
  • From Phata or Sersi, in the Kedar valley. If you are already staying at Phata or Sitapur, the Kedarnath Badrinath helicopter from Phata or Sersi is a 2 nights 3 days package: it leaves Phata or Sersi helipad at 07:00, lands at Badrinath at 08:00 for an escorted visit with darshan assistance, and is back at the helipad by 12:00, in time for Kedarnath the same day. Price on request; each pilgrim books the Kedarnath helicopter ticket on IRCTC.
  • All four dhams. The Chardham Yatra by helicopter includes Badrinath as one stop of a multi-day tour with Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath.

How the same-day Badrinath helicopter trip works

The fixed departure and the private charter follow the same tentative schedule from Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun:

  • 07:00: report at Sahastradhara Helipad for boarding and the pre-flight briefing.
  • 08:00: the helicopter leaves Dehradun for Badrinath.
  • 09:00: land at Badrinath. You are escorted to Badrinath Ji temple by car, with a puja booking with the temple committee where available, and attend the puja arranged for you.
  • 13:00: after darshan and puja, the helicopter leaves Badrinath for Dehradun.
  • 14:00: land back in Dehradun, where the services end.

That is about an hour in the air each way and around four hours at Badrinath. The exact schedule is advised a day before departure, and it can change at the last moment for weather or operational reasons.

Mana village is not on the same-day timetable. If you want to see Mana or attend the evening aarti, the Do Dham Yatra by helicopter stays overnight at Badrinath and includes a visit to Mana.

Badrinath helicopter price: fixed-departure package or the whole helicopter

Both are price on request: you get a written quote for your date and group size, inclusive of taxes and the State Government royalty, before anything is paid. Both include the same ground arrangements: car service at Badrinath with a puja booking with the temple committee where available, arrival and departure assistance, transport with a driver, and fuel, toll, parking and driver allowance. Travel to Dehradun, meals not listed, tips and personal expenses are not included.

  • Fixed departure: priced per pilgrim as a group package, usually the economical choice for one or two pilgrims who can travel on the operator's date.
  • Private charter: priced per helicopter for up to six passengers, usually cheaper per person for a larger group, on a date you choose.

Our service charges are shown in the written quote. Fixed-departure package or private charter compares the two in more detail.

Who each option suits

  • One to four pilgrims who can be flexible on the date: the fixed departure.
  • A family or group of up to six that needs a particular date, for a puja muhurat or a fixed holiday: the private charter.
  • Older pilgrims or anyone unsure of their fitness: Badrinath is the gentlest of the four dhams, close to its helipad with a car to the temple. It is still high, so pilgrims with heart or breathing conditions should ask their doctor about the altitude before booking.
  • Pilgrims who also want Kedarnath: a Do Dham; see Kedarnath vs Badrinath by helicopter.

Season, weather and a spare day

Badrinath temple opens around late April or early May and closes in the first half of November, with the exact dates set each year by tradition, so check the current year's dates before fixing travel. Every flight is subject to weather, and the Alaknanda valley can hold cloud when the surrounding ridges are clear. See the best time for Chardham Yatra by helicopter for the season month by month.

Because the first flight reports at 07:00, plan to reach Dehradun the evening before, and keep a spare day after your planned date so a cloudy morning means a short wait rather than a missed darshan.

Registration and ID

Every pilgrim to the Char Dham, Badrinath included, must register with the Uttarakhand government before travelling. The operator also needs each passenger's full name, age, government photo ID and accurate body weight for the flight's passenger list, and the names must match the ID carried on the day. Chardham Yatra registration and documents has the full checklist.

What to check before you pay

  • The full price in writing for your date, inclusive of taxes, with our service charges shown.
  • Every passenger's weight against the 410 kg total for up to 06 passengers per helicopter, and the baggage limit of 5 kg per person, with only one small pack of up to 2 kg in flight.
  • The payment terms: 50% of the tour cost confirms the booking, the balance is due 30 days before departure, and boarding only after full and final payment.
  • The rescheduling rule: 20% of the package, only if asked 15 or more days before the journey.
  • The cancellation terms: a 5% administrative fee on any cancellation, 30% of the package amount charged up to 30 days before departure, 50% up to 20 days before, and no refund within 14 days of departure or for a no-show, as set out in our terms and conditions.
  • What happens to your booking if weather stops the flight on your date. Ask for this in writing.

Questions

Badrinath Helicopter Booking from Dehradun, FAQs

How much does a Badrinath helicopter trip cost?
The price is on request, for both the private same-day return from Dehradun, where your group of up to six takes the whole helicopter, and a place on the fixed-departure group package, which needs a minimum of 06 passengers per flight. For either, you get a written quote for your date and group size, inclusive of taxes and the State Government royalty, before anything is paid.
Should I book a private helicopter or a fixed-departure package to Badrinath?
Both fly the same tentative schedule from Shastradhara Helipad, Dehradun with a puja booking with the temple committee where available at Badrinath. A private charter books the whole helicopter for your group, while the fixed departure is a group package that needs a minimum of 06 passengers, with a maximum of 06 in one helicopter.
How long does the Badrinath helicopter yatra take?
It is a same-day trip: about an hour in the air each way, with around four hours at Badrinath. The tentative schedule leaves Dehradun at 0700 and lands back at 1400. By road the journey from Dehradun is often two days each way.
Can senior citizens fly to Badrinath by helicopter?
Flying spares older pilgrims and families the long road, but Badrinath is at about 3,300 metres and the weather there changes quickly. Pilgrims with heart or breathing conditions should ask their doctor about the altitude before booking.
How much baggage is allowed on the Badrinath helicopter?
On both the private and fixed-departure flights, the maximum baggage allowance is 5 kg per person, with only one small pack of up to 2 kg in flight. A maximum of 06 passengers fly in one helicopter, and their total weight must not exceed 410 kg.
Can I visit Badrinath and Kedarnath together by helicopter?
Yes. The Kedarnath Badrinath Do Dham packages cover both shrines, including a same-day return from Dehradun and a Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter 3N/4D. The Kedarnath helicopter ticket is booked separately on heliyatra.irctc.co.in.
Is there a helicopter from Phata to Badrinath?
Yes, as part of the Kedarnath Badrinath Yatra by Helicopter, a 2 nights 3 days package based at Phata. On day two the helicopter leaves Phata at 07:00, lands at Badrinath at 08:00 for an escorted visit with darshan assistance, leaves at 11:00 and is back at Phata by 12:00, before the Kedarnath flight. The tentative schedule depends on the weather, the price is on request, and the Kedarnath helicopter ticket is booked separately on heliyatra.irctc.co.in.
How do I book a Badrinath helicopter?
For a place on the fixed-departure group package or a private charter, send the enquiry form or call +91-9634801801 with your date and group size, and we reply in writing with availability. The price is confirmed in writing, and 50% of the tour cost confirms the booking, with the balance due 30 days before departure.
Where does the Badrinath helicopter leave from, and is there a walk to the temple?
Both the fixed departure and the private charter leave from Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun and fly directly to Badrinath. From the Badrinath helipad you are taken to Badrinath Ji temple by car, with a puja booking with the temple committee where available, so there is no trek and no change of helicopter.
Can I visit Mana village on the same-day Badrinath helicopter trip?
Mana is not on the same-day timetable, which lands at Badrinath at 0900 and leaves at 1300 after darshan and puja. The Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter stays overnight at Badrinath and includes a visit to Mana and the evening Swarna Aarti.
Do I need Chardham yatra registration for a Badrinath helicopter trip?
Yes. Every pilgrim to the Char Dham, Badrinath included, must register with the Uttarakhand government before travelling, and a helicopter booking does not register you. The operator also needs each passenger's name, age, government photo ID and accurate weight, and the names must match the ID carried on the day.
When can I fly to Badrinath by helicopter?
Only while the temple is open: it opens around late April or early May and closes in the first half of November, with the exact dates set each year. Every flight is subject to weather, so check the current year's dates and keep a spare day in Dehradun after your planned date.
What happens if the weather stops the Badrinath helicopter?
The timetable is tentative: the exact schedule is advised a day before departure and can change at the last moment for weather or operational reasons. Ask for the arrangement for a flight that cannot operate in writing before you pay, and keep a spare day after your planned date.
