Govindghat to Ghangaria (Govind Dham), the hardest part of the approach.
One way in the air, instead of a long uphill day on foot.
Each helicopter sector carries a maximum of five passengers.
Flying hours, weather permitting. Mornings are the more reliable.
The Hemkund Sahib helicopter is a short flight on one sector only: from Govindghat, on the Badrinath road, up to Ghangaria, the small settlement that is the base for both Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers. On foot the same stretch is roughly 13 km of steady climb; by helicopter it is about 14 km of trail covered in around eight minutes.
The helicopter does not fly to the Gurudwara. Nothing lands at Hemkund Sahib. From Ghangaria, Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib is about 6 km further and much higher, at about 4,632 m, and that climb is on foot, by pony or by palki. The aircraft removes the approach, not the yatra. Because the final stretch is steep and the altitude affects everyone, plan a night at Ghangaria and make an early start on darshan day rather than trying to fly in and go straight up.
Both one-way and return flights are available. Flying up and walking down is a common choice: the descent is far easier than the climb, and it removes your dependence on a return slot. If you do book the return, know what happens when the weather closes in: you walk down, or you wait a day at Ghangaria.
Each pilgrim books the Govindghat–Ghangaria helicopter ticket on IRCTC HeliYatra; we do not sell or book these tickets. Chardham & Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra registration comes first, and the names on the ticket must match the photo ID you carry, because the passenger manifest is checked against it. The fare, capacity and flying hours are set out under Hemkund Sahib helicopter fare and where to book.
Most pilgrims book on heliyatra.irctc.co.in after completing their Chardham & Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra registration. IRCTC opens booking in phases, each for a range of travel dates, and the busy weeks go quickly, so be registered, signed in and ready when your phase opens. You pay the fare published there.
Our Hemkund Sahib Yatra by helicopter package plans the trip around your helicopter date: stay, breakfast, transfers and a pony or palki on request, priced on request for your date and group size and confirmed to you in writing. The helicopter ticket is not part of the package; we do not sell or book it.
Pay IRCTC for the ticket, and pay us only against a written quote for the package. A Hemkund Sahib helicopter ticket offered any other way, with pressure to pay today into a personal account, is a fake. The step-by-step booking detail is in our article on Govindghat to Ghangaria helicopter booking.
Keep one spare day on top of this. The helicopter stops for cloud and rain, and a day with no flying is a normal event in this narrow valley, not a failure of the booking. Do not book an onward flight for the evening you plan to fly down.
The Gurudwara is open only in the summer months: its portals open in late May and close around the second week of October, with snow at either end deciding the exact dates each year. Late May, June and September usually give the clearest flying. In July and August the monsoon cancels flights and closes roads more often. For Hemkund Sahib with better weather odds, early September, once the heaviest rain has eased, is a sensible target. Our Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib season guide goes month by month.
The aircraft is small and the allowance is small with it: a maximum of 5 kg per person, and only one small pack of up to 2 kg in flight. Excess-volume baggage is not allowed. Leave heavy luggage at Govindghat and carry a daypack, proper footwear and real rain gear.
Ghangaria is also the base for the Valley of Flowers National Park, which lies the other way from the Gurudwara and issues its own permit at the entry gate. The park opens around the start of June and closes in early October, but the bloom is concentrated broadly from mid-July through August, which is also peak monsoon. Allow an extra day at Ghangaria for the valley. See the Valley of Flowers yatra if the meadows are the main reason for your trip.
Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib sit in neighbouring valleys, a long day's drive apart, and six days leaves room for both darshans without racing the weather. We do not sell helicopter tickets. Please do not contact us for tickets. Because Hemkund Sahib opens later and closes earlier, the window for both is late May to early October.

The helicopter shortens the approach, from Govindghat to Ghangaria, and the last stretch to the Gurudwara is still on foot, by pony or by palki. Build a night at Ghangaria and a spare day into your Hemkund Sahib yatra, and confirm every booking and price in writing before you pay.
