About this trip

Govind Ghat to Hemkund Sahib: what the helicopter covers

This package starts at Govindghat, not Dehradun. The helicopter flies from Govindghat to Ghangaria, about 14 km of trail covered in around eight minutes, which saves the longest and hardest day of the walk. From Ghangaria the climb to Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib, one of the highest gurdwaras in the world at over 4,600 metres, is on foot or by pony or palki; no helicopter flies to the Gurudwara itself.

That is why the package keeps two nights at Ghangaria: one to rest after arriving, and an early start on darshan day, when the weather at the lake is usually clearest. The Gurudwara is open only in the summer months, and the helicopter flies only in fair weather, so a spare day in the plan is worth having.

Ghangaria is also the base for the Valley of Flowers. If the meadows are your reason to go rather than the Gurudwara, see the Valley of Flowers package from Dehradun.
