The Experience

Heli Skiing Service in India

Heli skiing uses a helicopter in place of a ski lift: it sets a small group down high on a mountain, and you ski long, untracked runs back down to a pickup point. In India it runs in the Himalaya around Manali and Gulmarg, usually from January to March, when there is enough snow and the weather allows flying.

It is for confident skiers. You should be comfortable on steep, ungroomed off-piste snow; if you have not skied powder before, a few days at a resort first is the right start. Every group skis with a mountain guide, and the operator provides avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, probe and shovel) and a briefing on using it and on boarding the helicopter.

Flying depends on the weather and the avalanche conditions on the day, and the guide and pilot decide what is skied. Tell us your dates, group size and skiing level, and we will come back with what operators can offer and a written quote.

How a heli skiing day works

  • Briefing. Before the first flight the guide checks each skier's avalanche transceiver and goes through using the probe and shovel, and the crew explains how to approach, board and leave the helicopter.
  • The lift. The helicopter flies the group up and sets it down on a ridge or a high bowl, then leaves.
  • The run. You ski down behind the guide, who chooses the line for the group's ability and that day's snow.
  • The pickup. The helicopter collects the group at the bottom and flies it up for the next run, as many times as the day, the weather and the package allow.

Snow and weather decide everything. Low cloud, poor visibility, strong wind or high avalanche risk keep the helicopter on the ground, and the guide and pilot decide what is skied and when to stop. A trip of several days, with spare days, gives the best chance of good flying.

Who heli skiing suits

Confident skiers and snowboarders who ride steep, ungroomed off-piste snow comfortably and are fit enough for several long runs in a day at altitude. If you have only skied groomed resort pistes, spend a few days skiing powder at a resort such as Gulmarg or Solang first. Tell us your level honestly in the enquiry: it decides the group you ski with and the terrain the guide picks.

What to send with your enquiry

  • The region you prefer: Manali, Kashmir or anywhere in the Himalaya.
  • Your dates, and how many days you want to ski.
  • The number of skiers and each person's level and off-piste experience.
  • Whether you bring your own skis or board, or need equipment arranged.
  • Whether you need the stay and road transfers arranged as well.

What decides the cost

There is no fixed rate. The written quote depends on:

  • The region and the base the helicopter flies from.
  • Flying time: how many runs, and how far each lift is.
  • Group size, since the helicopter's cost is shared by the group.
  • The number of days, including any spare weather days.
  • Guiding, equipment, stay and transfers, where they are included.

The same factors apply to any private helicopter charter.

What to check before you pay

  • The operator's name and the aircraft that will fly.
  • The guiding: one mountain guide with every group, and avalanche safety equipment for every skier.
  • What the price includes: number of runs or flying time, guiding, equipment, stay, transfers and taxes.
  • The weather terms: what happens to the money if the helicopter cannot fly on a booked day.
  • Your insurance: check that your travel or sports insurance covers heli skiing and mountain rescue.

Questions

Heli Skiing Service in India, FAQs

Where is heli skiing available in India?
Heli skiing is arranged in three regions of India: the Indian Himalayan ranges with high-altitude bowls and ridgelines, Manali with heli-ski terrain above the Solang and Rohtang region of Himachal, and Kashmir with powder around Gulmarg and the peaks of the Pir Panjal. Mention your preferred region in the Destination field of the heli skiing enquiry.
Can beginners try heli skiing in the Himalayas?
Heli skiing is for confident skiers who are comfortable on steep, ungroomed off-piste snow. If you have not skied powder before, spend a few days at a resort first. Share your skiing level in the enquiry so the operator can advise.
What safety support is provided for heli skiing in India?
Every group skis with a mountain guide. The operator provides avalanche safety equipment (transceiver, probe and shovel) and a briefing on it and on boarding the helicopter, and flying depends on the weather and avalanche conditions on the day. Every heli skiing request is subject to feasibility, permissions and operator acceptance, and submitting an enquiry does not by itself confirm the booking.
How much does a heli skiing package cost in Manali or Kashmir?
Prices depend on the region, number of runs and group size, and are shared on request through the enquiry form or by calling +91-9634801801. Include your preference, travel date, group size, skill level and any gear needs so the available heli skiing options can be matched to you.
What happens on a heli skiing day?
After a briefing on the avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel and on boarding the helicopter, the group is flown up to a ridge or high bowl, skis down behind the guide, and is picked up at the bottom for the next run, as many times as the day, the weather and the package allow.
What happens if the weather stops the helicopter?
Low cloud, poor visibility, strong wind or high avalanche risk keep the helicopter on the ground, and the guide and pilot decide what is skied. A trip of several days with spare days gives the best chance of good flying; ask for the weather terms in writing before you pay.
What should I check before paying for heli skiing?
The operator's name and aircraft, that a mountain guide skis with every group and every skier has avalanche safety equipment, what the price includes (runs or flying time, guiding, equipment, stay, transfers, taxes), the terms if a booked day cannot fly, and that your insurance covers heli skiing and mountain rescue.
