Chardham, Jyotirlinga Dham

About Kedarnath Dham

Kedarnath is one of the four dhams of the Chardham Yatra and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. By road, pilgrims travel from Haridwar through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar and Rudraprayag to Gaurikund, and then walk or ride a pony for about 16 km up to the temple. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun.

By helicopter from Dehradun, the same journey fits into a single day. It spares older pilgrims and families the long, steep climb to about 3,580 metres, although helicopter flights also depend on the mountain weather.

Planning guide

Kedarnath helicopter booking: your options

Every helicopter into Kedarnath lands on the official helicopter service from the Kedar valley, which each pilgrim books themselves. We do not sell helicopter tickets. Please do not contact us for tickets. What we arrange is everything around the helicopter flight:

  • Same day from Dehradun. The Dehradun to Kedarnath helicopter leaves Shastradhara Helipad at about 07:00, flies you to Phata for the Kedarnath helicopter and has you back in Dehradun at about 13:00, with no night in the valley. Up to 6 passengers fly in one helicopter.
  • Kedarnath and Badrinath with three hotel nights. The Kedarnath Badrinath stay package (3N/4D) flies from Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun, with a night in Dehradun, a night in Guptkashi after Kedarnath darshan via Sersi and the Kedarnath helicopter, and a night at Badrinath, all with meals, before the flight back on day 4. Each pilgrim books the helicopter ticket on IRCTC in their own name.
  • Kedarnath with other dhams. The Do Dham Yatra by helicopter pairs Kedarnath with Badrinath, and the Chardham Yatra by helicopter includes it with Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath. The Kedarnath leg still uses the IRCTC helicopter service.
  • The helicopter on its own. Already travelling to the valley by road? Book only the Kedarnath helicopter on heliyatra.irctc.co.in.

All of our packages are price on request and quoted in writing before you pay. The helicopter fare is separate: it is set by UCADA and the government authorities and paid to IRCTC.

Guptkashi, Phata or Sersi: where the helicopters fly from

The three helipads for the Kedarnath helicopter are in the Kedar valley in Rudraprayag district, on the road up to Sonprayag and Gaurikund. Sersi, near Sitapur and Sonprayag, is the closest to Kedarnath, a flight of a few minutes and usually the lowest IRCTC fare. Phata lies between Guptkashi and Sersi, around ten minutes' flight away. Guptkashi, furthest down the valley, has the longest flight. Book the helipad nearest to where you sleep the night before, because reporting is early and the valley road is slow in the season. The Kedarnath helipad is about 500 m from the temple.

Passengers, weight and baggage

  • On the helicopter: Bell 407 and AS 350 B3 helicopters, 04 to 06 passengers each. No more than 2 kg of baggage per passenger in flight, and overweight charges beyond 85 kg, decided at the helipad office. Members of a group may fly on separate helicopter flights.
  • From Dehradun: a maximum of 06 passengers per helicopter, 410 kg in total, with 5 kg of baggage per person and one small pack of up to 2 kg in flight.

Give accurate weights when you enquire. Kedarnath helicopter weight limit and baggage rules explains what to pack.

Registration, booking windows and a spare day

Chardham and Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra registration with Uttarakhand Tourism is mandatory, and you need it before the Kedarnath helicopter can be booked. IRCTC opens booking in phases, each for a block of travel dates, and seats for the busy weeks go within minutes. On the day, carry an original photo ID matching the booking, the yatra registration and the IRCTC ticket.

Flights depend on the weather at the helipads and at Kedarnath, and mornings are usually the clearest. Keep a spare day after your planned date, and do not book a train or flight out the same afternoon. See why helicopter yatra schedules move.
