Best time for Chardham Yatra by helicopter: month by month

Helicopter over snow-covered Himalayan peaks

The temples set the season and the weather sets the flying. Which months work best for a helicopter yatra, and which to avoid.

The Chardham Yatra runs for about six months a year, but not every one of those months is equally good for flying. The temples decide when the yatra can happen at all; the weather decides how well the helicopter can do its job.

When are the four temples open?

The dhams open in spring and close before winter snow. Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya, usually in late April or early May, and Kedarnath and Badrinath open around the same time; the exact dates are announced each year. They close between late October and mid-November, around Diwali and Bhai Dooj, when the deities move to their winter seats lower down the valleys.

Which months are best for a helicopter yatra?

May and June are the first good window. The weather is mostly clear and the days are long, which suits flying. It is also the busiest time of the year, so seats and hotels fill early.

September and October are the second, and for many pilgrims the better one. The monsoon has cleared the air, the mountains are sharp, the crowds are smaller and the temperature is comfortable. Booking early still matters, as the season is short.

Month by month at a glance

MonthFlyingWhat to expect
Late April to MayGoodTemples open; cold mornings at Kedarnath and Badrinath; crowds build from the opening days.
JuneGoodLong, mostly clear days; the busiest month; book well ahead.
July to AugustUnreliableMonsoon rain, cloud and landslides; many no-fly days.
SeptemberVery goodClear air after the rains, fewer crowds, comfortable days.
OctoberVery goodCrisp and clear; colder nights; temples begin closing late in the month or in November.
NovemberLimitedOnly until the remaining temples close; cold, with early snow possible.

Why are July and August hard?

The monsoon. Heavy rain, low cloud and landslides make mountain flying unreliable, and a day with no flights at all is common. Roads, which the yatra still uses for transfers, are also at their most fragile. Some flying continues, but plans need more spare time and flexibility, and many pilgrims simply avoid these months.

What about the very start and end of the season?

Late April and early November are cold, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath, and snow can arrive early or linger late. They suit pilgrims who want quieter temples and are ready for the cold, with warm clothing for both.

Which time suits which pilgrim?

Older pilgrims usually find September and October easiest: comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds at the temples and the most reliable flying. Families tied to school holidays often travel in May and June, and should book early. Pilgrims who want the opening ceremonies, or the quietest temples at the end of the season, should be ready for cold and for dates that are announced only a few months ahead.

Plan a spare day, whatever the month

Even in the best months, a morning can start cloudy and clear by noon. Building a spare day into the plan turns a weather delay into a short wait rather than a missed darshan. See why helicopter yatra schedules move for how flying decisions are made.
