Kedarnath by helicopter: what the flight day actually looks like

The flight to Kedarnath takes minutes. The day takes most of a day, and knowing why saves a great deal of frustration at the helipad.

Three helipads, not one

Kedarnath shuttle services run from lower-valley helipads — principally Guptkashi, Phata and Sirsi. They are different places, an hour or more apart by road, each with its own operators and slots. "A Kedarnath helicopter ticket" without a named base is only half a booking. Confirm which pad you are reporting to before you arrange the drive, because arriving at the wrong one is a day lost.

Each base sits at a different distance from the temple, and the flight time differs accordingly. Shorter is not automatically better: slot availability, road access on the day and weather in that particular valley all matter more than a few minutes in the air.

The shuttle rhythm

These are not scheduled airline departures. An operator flies a shuttle — the same aircraft going up and down through the flyable hours — and you are given a reporting time rather than a departure time. You wait at the pad, you are called, you fly. In clear weather this moves quickly. In marginal weather the queue absorbs everything.

Flying starts early, because that is when Himalayan weather is at its most cooperative. Cloud builds through the day and afternoons deteriorate; a rotation that is running smoothly at eight can be suspended by one. An early reporting time is not an operator being difficult, it is the operator using the part of the day that works.

At Kedarnath

The helipad is a walk from the temple — short, but at roughly 3,583 metres, and that altitude is felt. Take it slowly. People who sprint the last stretch to make up time are the ones who end up sitting down halfway.

Your time at the top is finite and it is set by the return rotation, not by the queue at the temple. Darshan queues vary enormously with the day and the season. Where an operator or package offers an arranged darshan, understand exactly what it includes before you rely on it — the temple, not the aviation company, governs entry.

Why the return time keeps moving

Your seat back is on whichever rotation has space when you are ready, and the shuttle is working a queue that has been reshuffled by every delay since dawn. Plan nothing tight for the same evening. A connecting train from Haridwar booked on the assumption of an early return is a bet against the weather, and the weather generally wins.

Things worth carrying

• Original photo ID for every passenger, matching the booking name exactly.
• Your registration, in whatever form the current season requires.
• Warm layers, even in June. You are leaving a warm valley for a cold one.
• Very little else. Baggage allowances on these sectors are small and strictly applied; a day pack is the right size.

The honest version

A Kedarnath helicopter booking removes a demanding trek. It does not remove altitude, queues, or weather.
